I'm Getting a Turtle For My Classroom!!!!

About a week ago, I posted about applying for a grant which would allow for the purchase of a pet for my classroom as well as the habitat for it.  The grant is from Pets in the Classroom and is sponsored by The Pet Care Trust.

Well.......I GOT IT!!!!

It only took about 3 or 4 days to hear from The Pet Care Trust by mail instead of the 2 - 4 weeks mentioned in the grant process.  When I saw the letter in my mail slot at school, I assumed it was just a note saying they had received my application, blah, blah, blah....but, oh no!  I opened the envelope and saw this...

...saying, "Congratulations!  Your request for funding for your Pets in the ClassroomTM project has been approved."  It was during lunch and before I knew it, I was dancing in the middle of the lunchroom floor!!  I couldn't help myself.  I was like a kid in a candy store. :)

I'll be getting an African Aquatic Sideneck Turtle.  I can teach so many Life Science concepts using this little guy and I can also use him when I teach Africa during Social Studies!  It's just good any way you look at it!

To tell my students, I put a picture of a Sideneck on my ActivBoard, covered it with a shape image and wrote "Guess What" on it.

When I moved the shape and they saw the picture and read that. "We're getting a turtle for our classroom," you would've thought some famous rapper was coming!

I was so excited that they were so excited and they had so many great questions about it.  I know this is going to be a positive experience for all of us!!!

I'll keep you updated as we go....

Math Game Monday Returns!!!

I plan to get back to some of the weekly features I was doing before.

One of my favorites {since math is my passion} was Math Game Monday!  I even have this cute little logo to go with it...so why not bring it back, right?!?!

Well, this week is an easy one.  If you've seen my FREEBIE:  Partner Picking Cards ~ Middle Grades Math, then you've seen this week's Math Game!

These cards can double as a Math Memory Game!

Just print them out, laminate them {because we know how destructive rough those little devils angels can be! ;-)}, turn them over, and viola!  You have an instant, easy Math Memory Game!!!

Here's a quick preview of 1 page of cards {there are 5 pages in all}.

Print multiple sets so your class can all work in small groups to match the cards.

Use them as a center along with other games.

Use them for early finishers.

The possibilities are almost endless!

You can link to these FREE cards in 2 different locations.  Pick the most convenient one for you!

Kinda Bummed About Week #3

As you know, I'm participating in The Clutter-Free Classroom Project.  I've been doing to so and having a lot of fun with the weekly challenges.

Here is Week #3:

TOPIC: Say Goodbye to the Clutter
Take pictures and document some things you were able to get out of your rooms this week. Let us see those trash bags bursting at the seams, the recycling bins filled to the brim, and the boxes of treasures waiting to be welcomed into the lives of other teachers.

PROMPT:
  • How much were you able to escort out the door this week?
  • Tell us about what you purged and how you felt doing so

There's what I was supposed to do...and I DID DO that {EXCEPT for the pictures!!!!}.

How could I be so forgetful???

Put on your Imagination Caps and picture all these things I did:

  • Threw out 3 BIG bags of trash
  • Gave away 2 lamps
  • Returned items I no longer used to Media Center
  • Brought home a few things that would work better in my Home Office
  • Gave spare binders, dividers, notebooks, etc. to needy students
  • Found the owner of some items left by previous occupant and returned them to her pile

I feel great about all the junk stuff I got rid of!!  It does make a big difference to have less to deal with!

I WILL take pictures this week!!!

FREEBIE: Partner Picking Cards ~ Middle Grades Math

Since the first set of Partner Picking Cards were such a hit, I decided to make another set!

This set is geared towards Middle Grades Math.  However, if you teach gifted lower grades or remedial upper grades, these would work for you as well!!

I've posted these on Teachers Pay Teachers.  While your there checking them out, I'd love for you to follow me as I have many more great things {freebies} planned!

Here's a little sneak preview of what you get.  {There are 5 pages of cards in all!}

Here's a set of 30 Partner Picking Cards using Middle Grades Math content. The math content is basic enough for most students to be able to use. These work great as a quick, easy way to randomly pair up students for a task or activity.

I hope you and your students enjoy using these!

Classroom Pet Grant

I love pets!  At home we have 4 dogs - a Chihuahua, a Pekingese, a German Shepherd, and a Great Dane {are you getting the visual?}, 1 cat, and a Chinchilla.

When I found out I would be teaching Science...Life Science, no less...I knew I wanted to have a classroom pet!

I've been a little hesitant since the cost can be a little overwhelming in the beginning.

However, thanks to Pets in the Classroom, I just found out there are grants available which allow for purchase of a classroom pet!!!  How awesome it that?

The program is through Pet Care Trust.

I just filled out the grant application and should hear back from the program within 2 weeks!!!

My fingers {and toes} are crossed!  I"ll keep you posted....

Clutter-Free Classroom Project ~ Week 2 Linky Party

Clutter-Free Classroom

Week #2 of The Clutter-Free Classroom Project came and went...without me being in the classroom for a single day!

My father passed away late last Sunday night, so I was out of work last week dealing with that. :(

However, I had already spent a few minutes last weekend thinking about the next challenge, so I'm still ready to link up!

BLOG PROMPT for Friday's Linky:
What is your plan for decluttering your classroom?

What I plan to do with my stuff is sort of covered in the rules I created for myself.Since I'm a tad OCD and like things to look nice, I made a mini-poster to keep in my storage closet in my classroom {as this is where the Clutter Junk Monster apparently resides}.

As far as what I've gathered...well, I have quite a few bins and tubs already in my classroom, but I do plan to pick up a few more in certain sizes.  I have a brand-new label maker {I'm smiling} that is ready to be broken in!

Other than that, I think I'm good to go!

I can't wait to move on the Week #3 and get rid of some junk stuff. :)

FREE Partner Picking Cards

I've just uploaded a FREEBIE on my TPT Store!

So, on a side note, I'd love for you to follow me on Teachers Pay Teachers!  My little store is brand-spanking new, but I promise to fill it up soon!

Partner Picking Cards ~ Pictures of famous, well-known 'partners'.

I use these cards when a random pairing can be used for an assignment.

You can quickly pass these out or have students draw one from a hat. They then have 30 seconds {or time limit of your choice} to find their partner.

My students always enjoy doing this and it gives them a short amount of time to move freely about the room.

Here's a sample of 1 of the 5 pages of cards:

Enjoy!
