Math "Game" Monday & Currently

Welcome to a late edition of Math Game Monday!  {I was tied up at a doctor's appointment longer that anticipated....then my camera battery died before I uploaded photos, then the internet was like pond water...}

This post will focus on measurement...metric measurement to be exact.'s not really a game, but man-oh-man did my students have a ball completing this during ELT one morning!

***Let me go ahead and make a HUGE DISCLAIMER right now!!!  As you will CLEARLY see in the pictures below, I DID NOT create this activity.  It is from an AIMS book I got from another teacher during my Student Teaching days.  Just wanted to make that crystal clear!  They get full credit for creating this activity.  I merely used the activity with my students and took pictures to share with you because they were enjoying it so much!***

You will also see the date is old...very old...1986!  It was printed before I even graduated from high school, which my students think was 80 years ago.  I did look at the AIMS Education Foundation website and I did find an updated version of a book with the same name printed in 2010.  However, I don't know if the same activities are included.  If not, you could always revamp this and create your own for your classroom.

So here is the AIMS sheet that I used:

All I needed to add was tape measures!

I did make sure that boys were paired with boys and girls with girls since there is measurement being done...just to be on the safe side.

As the activity started, I walked from group to group asking them to estimate the circumference of their big toe, which was included on their sheet.  It became very clear that most students could not picture a circumference of 2 or 3 inches, nor did they have a solid understanding of what 3 or 4 feet really looked like!  Then add metric to the mix...BONK...not even close!

So this simple little activity was an eye-opener for me and a genuine little learning task for my students.

Every student was enthused and engaged and didn't want to quit when class was over!

Here are a few pictures of them hard at work:

{I MUST invest in a better camera...and photography lessons!}

And,'s time for April's Currently!  This monthly Linky Party is hosted by Farley over at Oh Boy 4th Grade!

Enjoy :)

Making It {and smiling},
