In With The New!!! What To Expect In 2012...

Happy New Year!!

2012 is finally here!

I'm so glad you are here reading this as well. :)

I have some great things running around in my crazy head...hopefully I can corral them up and get them on paper before I confuse myself.

My basic plans are to bring you good, quality lessons and activities, websites and apps, and other useful tools for your classroom in 3 - yes 3- content areas.

1.  Math is and always will be my passion!  I'm not currently teaching math (hence the blog revamp), but I think I can still hang with the big dogs on this one. ;-)

2.  Science is my main content area this year.  I teach 4 7th Grade Life Science classes.  We've done so many cool, hands-on things already this year that I can't wait to share them with you!

3.  Social Studies is taught once a day by each person on my 4-member team.  I've been pleasantly surprised by how much I'm enjoying that time each day.  I'd love to pass on a few things here as well.

In addition, middle school teachers have other hats to wear throughout the year!

My school has an ELT (Extended Learning Time) every day.  The meat of that time varies from day-to-day, but we have a calendar to go by.  Clubs and assemblies are handled during this time, but there are quite a few other 'things' addressed during this 40-minute period - depending on the schedule.

Here are a few things that we do during ELT:

  • Academic time - I teach a Science ELT.  I try to make this as fun and hands-on as possible and do things we can't fit into regular class time.  I only have 12 - 14 students for this!!!
  • Bullying Prevention - My school follows the Second Step program.
  • Advisor/Advisee - I have a group of about 20 girls for this.
  • Manners - Yep, we teach those, too!
  • And other random things that come up. :)

While I don't want to get too broad on content, I do feel there are some wonderful ideas to share on the topics listed above.

So, come on for the ride - I think it's going to be a great one in 2012!!!

Please feel free to share my blog with others you think might benefit from it.  {PLEASE!!!}  Seriously - There aren't a lot of middle school blogs out there, so when we find one, I think it's important to pass it on.  Likewise, I'm always on the lookout myself, so if you find a good one, please feel free to share that with me as well!  We are all in this together. :O

I hope your New Year will be pleasant and prosperous, happy and healthy!

Making It {and smiling},

  1. What subject in social studies are you teaching? Sounds like you are in for a fun year!

We also use Second Step. It is wonderful! I actually supplemented with these Bullying Lessons (a bully program that I just enhanced to fit my needs) because I felt second step was great for dealing with your own personal anger and issues of controlling yourself, but it didn't really give strategies for what to do if you yourself were being bullied. I found that this went very well when paired with Second Step.

I look forward to your year of new posts!

  2. Thanks, Stephanie!]

7th Graders in Georgia learn the Middle East, Southern & Eastern Asia, and Africa. Lots of interesting things to do with those regions!

Second Step is good. I'm excited to check out your other lessons, too.

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. I've awarded you a Versatile Blogger Award. You can pick it up at Versatile Blog Awards at A Teachers Bag of Tricks
    - Lisa

  4. OMG! Thank you, Lisa...this is my 1st award!!! How sweet of you. I'll be right over to pick it up. :)
